Pred viac ako sto rokmi, 28. októbra 1918, sa na mape Európy objavil nový štát – Československá republika. Po rozpade Rakúsko-Uhorska sa spojili Česi a Slováci so spoločným cieľom – vytvoriť moderný, demokratický a slobodný štát.
Zrod Československa bol výsledkom dlhoročného úsilia osobností ako Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, Milan Rastislav Štefánik či Edvard Beneš. Ich vízia sa naplnila po skončení prvej svetovej vojny, keď sa začal rodiť nový poriadok v strednej Európe.
Nová republika, nové nádeje
Československo patrilo medzi najvyspelejšie štáty vtedajšej Európy – ekonomicky, kultúrne aj spoločensky. Slovensko vďaka spoločnému štátu zaznamenalo významný rozvoj školstva, infraštruktúry a priemyslu.
Vznikla prvá univerzita, rozšírila sa železničná sieť a rozvíjala sa kultúrna identita Slovákov, ktorá dovtedy prežívala v tieni uhorskej nadvlády.
Dve krajiny, jedna história
Po rozpade federácie v roku 1993 sa Slovensko a Česko vydali vlastnou cestou, no spoločná história zostala pevným mostom medzi národmi. Jazyk, kultúra aj humor nás stále spájajú viac, než si často uvedomujeme.
Kým v Českej republike je 28. október dodnes štátnym sviatkom, na Slovensku sa tento dátum pripomína skôr symbolicky – ako spomienka na začiatok modernej štátnosti a éru, ktorá formovala náš národ.
